Publications/ repertoire/
productions & background experience
I compiled and edited the two key collections of poetry by Irish poets for children: [a] the now classic Historical Anthology: Irish Poems for Young People (with Bridie Quinn, Wolfhound Press 1975, and now in paperback); and [b] the award winning, Something beginning with P: New poems by Irish Poets (The O’Brien Press, 2004 hardback, 2007 paperback). My own poetry collections are for adults, but while I have had poems selected for inclusion in children’s anthologies, my primary poetry writing is adult, in collections such as That morning will Come (Salmon Poetry, 2007), Clowns & Acrobats (Wolfhound Press 2000) and Carnival (Monarchline, 1988). As a book publisher, I developed the very highly regarded children’s literary and general book list at Wolfhound Press over many years. I am a former chair and board member of Children’s Books Ireland.
I have substantial experience facilitating & tutoring creative writing in poetry, my primary interest, and in story writing, at both primary and second level. I have tutored international student workshops in poetry & story, both online & in classroom sessions, with Schools Across Borders (and also work with third level and adult groups).
Originally from Conna in County Cork, I worked in Ireland and Tanzania as a teacher before turning to book publishing and poetry writing. I studied at St Colman’s Fermoy, NUI Maynooth and UCC.
